Before starting my career in tech, I spent a lot of my time working at music festivals and on tour as a VJ running visuals for artists like ZHU and Future. When I accepted my job offer for Snapchat towards the end of 2015, I left the live production world of music behind to join the booming world of tech and haven’t looked back until now.
A tour manager I’ve worked with in the past reached out to see if I would be interested in doing a one-off show running stage visuals for Seven Lions at Das Energi, a popular music festival out in Salt Lake City, Utah. The opportunity would be scratching an itch I’ve been having to do visuals again and it wouldn’t pull me from the tech world for more than a couples of days, so I accepted the challenge!
It was the night before the show, and I was a 2 hour flight away from home in Salt Lake City at Das Energi for soundcheck. I was extremely nervous, as I haven’t been near front of house in about 4 years - This was my comeback. Luckily, soundcheck went great and setup was a breeze which confirmed that I GOT THIS.
My nerves were intensified with every strobe that surrounded me. 4 years ago I was a pro that never got nervous doing this, but now I was revisiting a beast of the past that I wasn’t too sure I could defeat.
As the show started, the beast of the past quickly transformed into an old friend who I haven’t seen in years. We quickly picked up where we left off as if we’ve been hanging out everyday this whole time.
Nothing was more exciting than seeing the crowd go crazy during Seven Lions’ set. The music, lights, and visuals working together in sync for an hour proved that my comeback after 4 years was just as strong as when I left.
